CEC in the News: The Center Square Highlights CEC’s Supreme Court Brief Defending Arizona’s Voter Citizenship Safeguards

The Center Square highlighted Center for Election Confidence’s (CEC) amicus brief in Republican National Committee v. Mi Familia Vota (No. 25-1017), reporting that CEC and its partners, Restoring Integrity and Trust in Elections (RITE) and the Honest Elections Project (HEP) urged the U.S. Supreme Court to reverse the Ninth Circuit’s decision restricting Arizona’s enforcement of its proof-of-citizenship requirement and its ability to remove improperly registered noncitizens from the voter rolls.

In it, The Center Square features CEC Executive Director Lisa Dixon’s response to the case. “American elections are for American citizens only. Period.” Dixon explained that Arizona should be able to ensure noncitizens cannot register to vote and remove noncitizens who nevertheless appear on voter lists. The Center Square also described the brief’s argument that the Ninth Circuit misread the National Voter Registration Act and improperly limited states’ authority to enforce voter qualifications.

The Center Square further highlighted the brief’s warning that the Ninth Circuit’s reasoning could extend beyond noncitizens to other individuals who were never eligible to register, including minors and fictitious persons. CEC and its fellow amici have asked the Supreme Court to reverse the Ninth Circuit and clarify the authority states retain to verify voter eligibility and maintain accurate voter rolls.
